What questions should I ask during a permanent restraining order hearing?
My situation involves an ex-boyfriend that is a drug addict that finances his drug use by selling his prescription medications. He is addicted to crack cocaine, cocaine — both of which he snorted, smoked and used intravenously– and uses marijuana, all on an extremely regular basis (more than three times a week). While under the influence, his behavior has been erratic, paranoid and dangerous — he often hides knives, ice picks, screwdrivers all around the house; he believes that there are other people in the house or trying to get into the house; he feels threatened; he has grabbed me, shoved me; he has threatened to kill me if I called the police. Once sober, he claims that he remembers doing none of these things and swears that he isn’t capable of such acts in behavior or of aggression.
As of last week, he was arrested during a search of our home, brought on by my contacting authorities about two months ago. Monday, I filed for an ‘ex parte protective order’ and he was served while in jail (now released on bond as of the same day). My hearing is set for the 21st and I will have to face and question him in court.
Since September, I have been terrorized by this man. I have been mentally, emotionally, and at times, physically abused (grabbed, shoved, pushed). I have lived like a ‘church mouse’ — afraid to make a sound, worried that whatever I did would lead him to become angry and threatening to me. He controlled every aspect of my life while in this house — what I did, what/when I cooked, where/when I went anywhere, money, use of a (his) cell phone; closed/shut me away in rooms when he would buy/sell drugs, make me stay awake during his reactions to the various drugs he used (where there were weeks when I only had 2 to 4 hours of sleep during the night/day), forced me to take prescription medications to make me sleep so that he could use drugs without me interrupting or being around, and I believe that he drugged me without my knowledge for the same reasons. Brought other addicts and criminal elements into the house to buy/sell drugs.
I’m extremely scared and fearful of this man, his ‘friends’ and dealers, because I was the one that notified law enforcement about the activities that have gone on in this house. To my knowledge, law enforcement has not told him about my involvement or that I gave them information, but by mere ‘process of elimination’ and by my filing for a restraining order, I’m sure that he’s deduced I’m behind it.
So, with the 21st coming, I want to make sure that I ask the right questions of him to make sure that this temporary restraining order becomes permanent. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone with a legal background could help me outline various questions to ask during a this hearing.
PS — I kept an online journal since October, noting his actions and behavior, names/dates/times, descriptions of people and vehicles when I was able to see them and wasn’t shut away in a room.

In North Carolina, the plaintiff/respondent have a hearing where they represent themselves (unless they have attorneys) and ask questions. I cannot afford an attorney, but I will have a victims advocate in court with me for support. I was also unaware that I would have to face him in court and ask questions of him, and vice versa.
My hope is that he will not show up and I will be granted the permanent restraining order, because I will be asking if he uses illegal drugs and sells his prescription medications. He is already being investigated for this and admitting it during a hearing would only go towards proving his guilt in upcoming felony charges. But if decides to show up, I would like to be prepared.
Please note that he is to be in court on the 27th. He is facing the following charges:
Felony possession of cocaine
Misdemeanor possession of marijuana
Misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia
And is still being investigated for selling his prescription medications.

Read what you have written if asked what has been going on . It is excellent.
You don’t need to be asking any questions.
A felony possession of cocaine will have him in jail /prison for quite a while.
If you see him anywhere near you, call the police.
