Going to Go See a Rated R Movie?

Question by Olivia: Going to go see a rated R movie?
I’m 14 and I wanted to go see a rated R movie with my friend but since its rated R my mom has to go with but she doesn’t like scary movies. Is it possibly if she comes to the movies with us but goes to see a different movie?

No, that is not possible. In order for someone under age to see an “R” rated film, the adult/guardian MUST accompany them to the film. This means that she would have to see the same film with you.

Edit – I don’t see why Ariana thinks she is right. It is clearly against the law for a movie theater to allow a 14 year old to see a R rated film while the parent goes to another film. Movie theaters will not break the law just to make you happy.

“R — Restricted. Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian. An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the Rating Board, contains some adult material. An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. Generally, it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-rated motion pictures.”

If your mom buys the tickets for you guys, then you’re allowed to see it.

People under 18 are allowed to see rated R movies as long as a parent is there when they buy the tickets. If a parent is okay with it, then there’s no problem.

But honestly, you don’t even need to drag your mom along. Everyone just buys tickets to a different movie and sneaks into the rated R one instead. Usually people do this when their parent doesn’t know that they’re seeing an R movie, but since your mom is willing to come then just have your her buy the tickets.

EDIT: What Gabe said it untrue — You need parents CONSENT, you don’t need them to hold your hand and take you in the theater, and sit there until you’re done.
